Community Impact

Everything we do across our companies is meant to support the communities we’re a part of. We know the work we do today helps shape the Hawaii our children will grow up in.

That belief is reflected in efforts like Kahauiki Village and the ongoing work at Hui Mahi‘ai ʻAina, initiatives that create stability and long-term opportunity for families and individuals. 

This sense of responsibility is what motivates us and keeps us moving forward.

Kahauiki Village is a plantation-style community developed in response to Hawaii’s homelessness crisis. The project, a public-private-partnership, grew out of a vision by our founder, Duane Kurisu. Through our aio Foundation, we convened government, business and community partners and volunteers to secure/develop the land and fund and build the first phases of the community.

The first families moved in when Phase 1 was completed in January 2018. The community continued to grow with employment and pre-vocational programs, a children’s center, a post office, community center, playground, and youth center added over the years.

In 2020 the 100th family moved into Kahauiki. In 2022, management and lease of the site transitioned to the Institute for Human Services (IHS), a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness and providing tailored services such as housing assistance, outreach, employment services, and family programs on Oahu.

We also support nonprofit media and solutions journalism that elevate thoughtful reporting, community voices, and pathways forward.

By focusing on what’s working and not just what’s broken, this work helps inform public dialogue and contribute to more informed outcomes for Hawaii.
